Tertullian — Against Marcion 5.8

Tertullian · Against Marcion · c. 208

Hear now how he also announced that gifts would come after Christ was received into heaven: “He ascended on high… he gave gifts to the sons of men” — that is, the grants which we call charismata.

And now also that promise of the Spirit stands fulfilled which was made through Joel: “In the last times I will pour out of my Spirit on all flesh, and their sons and daughters shall prophesy…”

Compare, then, the kinds named by the Apostle and by Isaiah. “To one,” he says, “is given through the Spirit a word of wisdom” — at once Isaiah also placed a spirit of wisdom; to another a word of knowledge… to another faith in the same Spirit… to another gifts of healings, to another workings of powers… to another prophecy, to another distinguishing of spirits, to another kinds of tongues, to another interpretation of tongues…

I can say: the very fact that he matched the unity of our body through many and diverse members to the fitting-together of various gifts shows the same Lord of the human body and of the Holy Spirit — who did not want the rankings of gifts in the Spirit’s body to be what he also did not place among the members in the human body — and who also instructed the Apostle that love is to be preferred to all the gifts.

Latin

accipe nunc, quomodo et a Christo in caelum recepto charismata obuentura pronuntiarit: ascendit in sublimitatem… data dedit filiis hominum, id est donatiua, quae charismata dicimus… iam nunc et illa promissio spiritus absoluta, facta per Iohelem: in nouissimis temporibus effundam de meo spiritu in omnem carnem, et prophetabunt filii filiaeque eorum… compara denique species apostoli et Esaiae. alii, inquit, datur per spiritum sermo sapientiae… alii sermo scientiae… alii fides in eodem spiritu… alii donum curationum, alii uirtutum… alii prophetia, alii distinctio spirituum, alii genera linguarum, alii interpretatio linguarum… ipsum quod corporis nostri per multa et diuersa membra unitatem charismatum uariorum compagini adaequauit, eundem et corporis humani et spiritus sancti dominum ostendit… qui de dilectione quoque omnibus charismatibus praeponenda apostolum instruxerit.
