Tertullian — On the Soul 9
But we also ascribe bodily lines to the soul, not only from confidence in its bodily nature by estimation, but also from the constancy of grace by revelation. For because we acknowledge spiritual gifts, we have also been granted to receive prophecy after John.
There is today among us a sister who has obtained gifts of revelations, which she suffers in the Spirit through ecstasy in the church amid the Lord’s solemnities. She converses with angels, sometimes also with the Lord; she both sees and hears sacred things, discerns the hearts of some, and takes medicines for those who desire them. Indeed, as the Scriptures are read or psalms are sung or addresses are offered or petitions are delegated, from these the materials for visions are supplied.
After the solemnities were finished and the people dismissed, by the custom in which she usually reports to us what she has seen (for these things are also carefully recorded so that they may even be tested), she said among the rest: “The soul was shown to me corporeally…” And God is witness, and the apostle is a fit surety of gifts that will be in the church.
