Novatian — On the Trinity 29

Novatian · On the Trinity · c. 250

This is the one who strengthened their minds and thoughts, who distinguished the gospel mysteries, who was in them the illuminator of divine things — by whom, confirmed for the Lord’s name, they feared neither prisons nor chains; rather they trampled the powers of the age and its torments, already armed and strengthened through him, having in themselves the gifts which this same Spirit distributes and directs to the church, the bride of Christ, as certain ornaments.

This is the one who appoints prophets in the church, trains teachers, directs tongues, works powers and healings, performs wonderful works, extends discernings of spirits, contributes governances, suggests counsels, and arranges and distributes whatever other gifts of the charismata there are — and therefore makes the Lord’s church perfect and complete on every side and in all things.
