Shepherd of Hermas — Mandate 11
He showed me people sitting on a bench, and another man sitting on a chair, and he says to me, “Do you see those sitting on the bench?” “I see them, Lord,” I say. “These,” he says, “are believers, and the one sitting on the chair is a false prophet who destroys the mind of the servants of God — of the double-minded, not of the faithful.”
These double-minded ones come to him as to a diviner and ask him what will happen to them; and that false prophet, having in himself no power of a divine spirit, speaks with them according to their questions and according to the desires of their wickedness, and fills their souls as they themselves wish. For being empty himself, he also answers empty things to the empty.
Every spirit given from God is not questioned, but having the power of the Godhead it speaks everything of itself, because it is from above, from the power of the divine Spirit. But the spirit that is questioned and speaks according to human desires is earthly and light, having no power; and it does not speak at all unless it is asked.
“How then,” I say, “Lord, will a person know which of them is a prophet and which a false prophet?” “Listen,” he says, “concerning both kinds of prophet… Test from the life the man who has the divine Spirit. First, the one who has the Spirit from above is gentle and quiet and humble-minded, and keeps away from every wickedness and vain desire of this age, and makes himself poorer than all people, and answers nothing to anyone when questioned, nor speaks alone, nor does the Holy Spirit speak when a person wants to speak; but then he speaks when God wants him to speak.
So when the man who has the divine Spirit comes into an assembly of righteous men who have faith of a divine Spirit, and prayer is made to God by that assembly, then the angel of the prophetic Spirit who rests upon him fills the man, and the man, filled with the Holy Spirit, speaks to the multitude as the Lord wills. In this way the Spirit of the Godhead will be clear.
Now listen concerning the earthly and empty spirit that has no power but is foolish. First, that man who thinks he has a spirit exalts himself and wants the first seat, and at once he is bold and shameless and talkative, living in many luxuries and many other deceits, and taking wages for his prophecy; if he does not receive, he does not prophesy. Can a divine spirit take wages and prophesy? It is not possible for a prophet of God to do this; but of such prophets the spirit is earthly.
Then he does not approach an assembly of righteous men at all, but flees from them; he clings to the double-minded and empty and prophesies to them in a corner and deceives them, speaking emptily according to their desires. But when he comes into an assembly full of righteous men who have a Spirit of Godhead, and prayer comes from them, that man is emptied, and the earthly spirit flees from him for fear, and that man is struck dumb and wholly shattered, able to say nothing.
You have the life of both kinds of prophet. Test, then, from works and life the man who says he is Spirit-bearing. Trust the Spirit that comes from God and has power; trust nothing in the earthly and empty spirit, for there is no power in it — for it comes from the devil.
