Cyril of Jerusalem — Catechetical Lecture on the Holy Spirit (against Manes as Paraclete)

Cyril of Jerusalem · Catechetical Lectures · c. 350

The most impious Manes… dared to say that he himself was the Paraclete whom Christ promised to send. But the Savior, knowing beforehand, said to the apostles: “You stay in the city of Jerusalem until you are clothed with power from on high.” What then? Were the apostles who died two hundred years ago waiting for Manes until they should be clothed with the power? And will anyone dare to say they were not from then on full of the Holy Spirit? And it is written that then they laid on hands and they received the Holy Spirit.
