Cyprian — On the Unity of the Church 15

Cyprian · On the Unity of the Church · c. 251

For to prophesy and to cast out demons and to do great powers on earth is indeed a lofty and wonderful thing; yet whoever is found in all these does not obtain the heavenly kingdom unless he walks by keeping to the observation of the right and just path.

The Lord declares and says: “Many will say to me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ And then I will say to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you who work iniquity.’”

Work of righteousness is needed, that one may be able to deserve God the Judge; his precepts and warnings must be obeyed, that our merits may receive their wage.

Latin

Et tunc dicam illis: Nunquam vos cognovi, recedite a me, qui operamini iniquitatem.
