Commodian — Instructiones 40
Isaiah said: This is the man who shook the globe and as many kings, under whom the earth will be made desert. Hear, for the prophet foretold of him; I have composed nothing — I speak by reading the law. Then of course the world is finished when he appears and himself conquers three rulers in the world. But when Nero has been raised from hell, Elias will come first to seal the beloved, before the king rules at the end and the whole constriction. For seven years the earth will tremble everywhere: but half the time Elias, half Nero will hold. Then Babylon the whore will be burned to ash; from there he will go to Jerusalem, and the Latin victor then says: “I am Christ, whom you always pray.” And indeed the first deceived praise him, since his false prophet does many signs. … The Almighty grants that the spiritual one wipe away. Recapitulating the scriptures from him, the Jews cry together to the Highest that they themselves were deceived.
