Commodian — Instructiones 2

Commodian · Instructiones · c. 250

When almighty God had adorned the world’s nature, he willed that earth to be visited by angels; sent, they scorned his laws. So great was women’s beauty that it bent them. Contaminated, they cannot return to heaven; rebels from then, they cast words against God. The Highest then sent sentence on them; from their seed giants are said born. By them arts were proven on earth, and they taught dyeing wools and whatever is done, and those mortals were setting the dead in an image. But the Almighty, because they were of a crooked seed, did not decree that they, dead, be received back from death. Whence now wanderers overturn many bodies — especially those you this day worship and pray to as gods.

Ab ipsis in terra artis probata fuere, Et tingere lanas docuerunt et quaecumque geruntur, Mortales et illi mortuos simulacro ponebant.
