Basil of Caesarea — On the Holy Spirit (distribution of gifts / 1 Cor 12)

Basil of Caesarea · On the Holy Spirit · c. 375

Is the ordering of the church not clearly and without contradiction worked through the Spirit? For he himself, it says, gave to the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then powers, then gifts of healings, helps, governances, kinds of tongues. For this is the order arranged according to the division of the gifts from the Spirit.

…and there are distributions of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are distributions of ministries, but the same Lord; and there are distributions of workings, but the same God who works all things in all. But all these, it says, the one and the same Spirit works, distributing to each one individually as he wills.
